One of the seven Sapta Badri shrines of the Garhwal Himalaya, holding a life-size Shaligram image of Vishnu seated in meditation — the posture that gives the shrine its name. When the Badrinath temple closes for the winter its festival image is carried down to this sanctuary and worshipped here until the summer reopening.
Pandu, father of the Pandavas, is said to have meditated on Vishnu at this spot to be cleansed of the sin of killing two mating deer.
