History & significance

Mumbai's darling deity: the right-turned-trunk Ganesha carved from a single black stone, whose Tuesday queues wind for hours with mill workers, film stars and industrialists alike. Built with the endowment of a childless woman, Deubai Patil, who prayed that others be granted children — the wish-fulfilling reputation stuck for two centuries.

Sthala katha — the legend

The right-tilted trunk marks a siddha — awakened and exacting — Vinayaka: quick to bless, quicker to test; devotees whisper wishes into the ears of the mushak (mouse) in the courtyard to carry them in.
