The highest gurdwara in the world, a pentagonal sanctuary beside a glacial lake ringed by seven peaks at 4,632 m, near the Valley of Flowers. Snowbound most of the year, it draws lakhs of Sikh pilgrims each summer up the steep trail from Govindghat.
In the Dasam Granth, Guru Gobind Singh recalls a previous life meditating at a lake of ice (Hemkund) united with God until called to be reborn for dharma's defence — the site was traced from that verse and confirmed in the 1930s by Sant Sohan Singh and Havildar Modan Singh.
