A Shiva shrine on a 2,140-foot hill in Ranchi, once called Tiriburu, whose summit the British used as a gallows for freedom fighters. K. C. Das raised the tricolour here at independence, said to be the first temple in the country to fly the national flag, and a stone on the hill records 14–15 August 1947; it fills with pilgrims at Shivaratri and through Sawan.
