History & significance

A Durga temple near Vatakara in Kozhikode district, held by its records to be about fifteen hundred years old, and closely bound to the martial culture of northern Malabar.

Sthala katha — the legend

The temple is inseparable from the ballads of the warrior Thacholi Othenan, and practitioners of Kalaripayattu still seek the goddess's blessing here before their first public performance.
