History & significance

The shrine on the north bank of the Periyar at the village held to be Adi Shankara's birthplace, dedicated to him and to Saradamba, the presiding goddess of Sringeri. It also holds the samadhi of Shankara's mother, and has been run by the Sringeri Matha since the Raja of Travancore acquired the family property in 1905 and handed it over.
