History & significance

A near-hundred-foot brick rekha deul standing alone in the Sundarbans, found by land surveyors in the mid-nineteenth century and now an ASI monument of national importance. A lost inscription said to be dated 975 CE is attributed to Raja Jayantachandra; the sanctum held no image when recorded, and whether it began as Hindu or Buddhist is still debated.
