Bihar's best-known sun temple and the focus of enormous Chhath gatherings each year, dated by the ASI to the fifth or sixth century, with a 1437 inscription recording a dedication by King Bhairavendra. It faces west toward the setting sun rather than east, and some scholars argue it began as a Buddhist shrine before being reconsecrated to Surya.
Local tradition says Vishwakarma, the divine architect, raised the whole temple in a single night.
