History & significance

The Tirukkadavur Mayanam shrine beside Thirukkadaiyur, one of the five sacred Mayana (cremation-ground) kshetras where Shiva is held to have burnt Brahma to ashes. A Paadal Petra Sthalam with Chola-era idols and Vijayanagar-period inscriptions.

Sthala katha — the legend

At the end of every eon Shiva burns Brahma to ashes, and the celestials pleaded here for Brahma's restoration so creation could continue.
