மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயில்
Madurai, Tamil Nadu · 9.9195°, 78.1193°
The great goddess-first temple of Tamil Nadu and the heart of Madurai, whose 14 gopurams (the tallest ~52 m) covered in painted stucco deities define the city skyline. The shrine is ancient — sung in Sangam and Tevaram literature — but the vast present complex is chiefly the work of the Madurai Nayaks after the 1310 sack.
Meenakshi, the fish-eyed warrior queen born with three breasts, conquered the directions until she met Shiva at Kailasa; her third breast vanished, and their wedding — the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam — is re-enacted each Chithirai festival with Vishnu as her brother giving her away.
Central Madurai; Madurai airport ~12 km.
