History & significance

At ~63 hectares with seven concentric walled enclosures and 21 gopurams, Srirangam is the largest functioning Hindu temple complex in the world and the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams. The philosopher Ramanuja systematised Sri Vaishnavism from here in the 11th–12th century; his preserved remains are enshrined in the complex.

Sthala katha — the legend

The idol is said to be the Ranga Vimana worshipped by Rama himself, gifted to Vibhishana; set down on this island mid-journey to Lanka, it rooted itself facing south, forever gazing toward Vibhishana's kingdom.

Reaching there

Island between Kaveri and Kollidam rivers; Tiruchirappalli airport ~15 km.
