A goddess shrine on a 1,600-foot hill at Dongargarh reached by about a thousand steps or a ropeway, with a second temple, Chhotti Bambleshwari, on level ground half a kilometre away. It is one of Chhattisgarh's largest Navaratri pilgrimages, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees.
Tradition tells of the childless king Veersen granted a son, Madansen, by Shiva and Parvati, after which he built the temple; another account has the goddess appearing to stop Vikramaditya from taking his own life.
