Twelve rock-cut Buddhist shrines carved out of soft basalt nine kilometres from the city, arranged in western, eastern and northern groups. They combine early stupa worship with Mahayana sculpture and Vajrayana goddesses alongside figures such as Durga and Ganesha, and although overshadowed by Ajanta and Ellora, scholars read them as a link between those two sites; they are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
