The shrine of Swami Samarth, a 19th-century master of the Dattatreya tradition who came to Akkalkot around 1856 and took samadhi in 1878; his large following across Maharashtra keeps the ashram a busy pilgrimage centre.
The Swami said that he had emerged from a banyan tree and had earlier borne the name Nrusimha Bhan, and devotees regard him as an incarnation of Dattatreya.
