History & significance

The eighth of the Nava Tirupati Divya Desams, where the reclining lord is imagined as keeper of a buried treasure, and the birthplace of Madhurakavi Alvar, devoted disciple of Nammalvar. The present structure owes its refurbishment to Rani Mangammal of Madurai.

Sthala katha — the legend

Kubera, cursed by Shiva, is said to have regained his lost wealth after penance before Vaithamanidhi here.
