History & significance

An 8th-century royal foundation of Pallava Nandivarman II and a Divya Desam, whose stepped vimana with tiered sanctums provided a prototype for the far larger temples of later Tamil Nadu. Its sculpted cloister panels narrate Pallava history, and its study has even helped date portions of the Bhagavata Purana.

Sthala katha — the legend

A child of sage Bharadvaja's line, granted by Vishnu to a childless Pallava king, is said to have grown to build this temple as king Parameswara.
