History & significance

A large temple at Suchindram in Kanyakumari district revered by both Shaiva and Vaishnava traditions, unusual for enshrining all three members of the Trimurti in one linga. Its masonry structure dates from the Chola period, with a 44 m eleven-storey eastern gopuram added under later patrons.

Sthala katha — the legend

Anasuya, wife of the sage Atri, is said to have turned Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva into infants by the power of her chastity, after which the three emanated here as lingas.
