History & significance

One of the principal Shakti Peethas of western India — in the sanctum there is no image at all, only the gold-inscribed Visa Yantra, veiled so that even priests do not look at it directly while decorating. The Bhadarvi Purnima fair draws millions on foot; the flame lit on Gabbar hill, the goddess's original seat, answers the temple's own.

Sthala katha — the legend

Here, in the Peetha geography, fell the heart of Sati; local tradition adds that the infant Krishna's mundan (first tonsure) was performed at the goddess's feet, and that Rama sought her blessing before facing Ravana.
