History & significance

A group of three adjacent Vishnu temples on the edge of Thanjavur that together form a single Divya Desam, an arrangement unique among the 108; patronage spanned the Cholas, Vijayanagara and the Madurai Nayaks.

Sthala katha — the legend

The Brahmanda Purana tells of Vishnu slaying three demons here - Thanjakan among them - from whom Thanjavur is said to take its name.
