History & significance

A Pallava-built Divya Desam at Thiruvellarai north of Tiruchirappalli, praised by Periyalvar and Thirumangai Alvar; its rock-cut caves and inscriptions date to the 8th century, with construction completed under Dantivarman.

Sthala katha — the legend

A legend tells of king Sibi following a white boar to this spot, where at sage Markandeya's word Vishnu appeared from a milk-filled pit to receive worship.
