History & significance

A hillock Divya Desam adjoining Sivakasi built by the Pandya king Devendra Vallabha, with inscriptions from the 8th century; the standing Narayana is flanked by his three consorts and sung in the Divya Prabandham.

Sthala katha — the legend

Sridevi is said to have performed penance here until Vishnu appeared and stayed - 'thangal' - beside her, naming the town.
