History & significance

The vast twin temple of Nellaiappar and Kanthimathi dominating Tirunelveli, its sanctums credited to the 7th-century Pandya Nindraseer Nedumaran, with musical pillars and later mandapams spread over nearly six hectares. It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam of the Tevaram canon.

Sthala katha — the legend

Vishnu is said to have witnessed the wedding of Shiva and Parvati in the bamboo grove (Venuvana) that gave the deity his name.
