One of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, about 20 km north of Tiruchirappalli, with a shrine ascribed to Mahendravarman I (c. 640 CE) and inscriptions of Rajaraja I and Rajendra I. Known as Thenkailasam, it draws unmarried devotees seeking spouses and preserves a venerated plantain tree and Rathina Sabha.
In a contest of strength between Vayu and Adisesha, eight fragments of Mount Kailasa were scattered across the south, and Thiruppainjeeli's white hill (Suwethagiri) is held to be one of them.
