History & significance

A roughly 600-year-old Shakta pitha in the West Jaintia Hills, established under the Jaintia king Jaso Manik and regarded as the goddess's permanent seat in north-east India. It draws large crowds of pilgrims at Durga Puja.

Sthala katha — the legend

The goddess is said to have appeared to King Jaso Manik in a dream asking for a temple at the place where Sati's left thigh had fallen.
