History & significance

The city-centre Divya Desam of Madurai, believed to be a Pandya foundation later expanded by 16th-century Vijayanagara and Nayak rulers, distinguished by its rare three-tiered Ashtanga vimana.

Koodal Azhagar is said to have slain the demon Somuka and recovered the four Vedas stolen from Brahma.
