History & significance

One of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified by Tirugnanasambandar, built as an elevated maadakkovil attributed to the Early Chola king Kochengat Chola before 660 CE; it has an 80-foot rajagopuram and two prakarams.

Sthala katha — the legend

During the great deluge, the lid of Brahma's pot holding the seeds of all living beings is said to have come to rest at this spot.
