History & significance

The principal temple of Panchavati in Nashik, named for its black image of Rama, rebuilt in the eighteenth century by Sardar Rangarao Odhekar after the image was recovered from the Godavari. It was the site of B. R. Ambedkar's satyagraha of 1930 against the exclusion of Dalits from temples.

Sthala katha — the legend

Rama is said to have spent two and a half years of his exile on the northern bank of the Godavari here, in the grove called Panchavati.
