A Hindu pilgrimage site and hot-spring bathing place in the Garhwal Himalaya at about 6,500 feet, best known as the road head and base camp for the trek to Kedarnath. It is revered as the spot where Parvati performed the austerities by which she won Shiva.
Parvati is said to have shaped Ganesha from the suds of her bath here, and when Shiva struck off the boy's head in anger he restored him to life with the head of an elephant.
