History & significance

A Paadal Petra Sthalam near Kumbakonam whose sanctum carries a rare Gajaprashta (elephant-back) vimana over a self-manifested lingam. The shrine is glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems.

Sthala katha — the legend

Shiva, 'the lord who knows writing', is said to have submitted the temple accounts to the king himself to save a devoted accountant from punishment.
