History & significance

A Shiva shrine on the Kaveri in Thanjavur district praised by Sambandar in the Tevaram, and one of the 88 temples of the Thanjavur Palace Devasthanam administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department.

Sthala katha — the legend

Hanuman, travelling south along the Kaveri with Rama, is said to have installed the Dayanidhi lingam here, giving the village its name, "the river-forest of the northern monkey".
