History & significance

A pilgrimage town in Birbhum district whose temple of Adi Shakti is counted among the 51 Shakta Pithas. It is one of the principal Devi pilgrimage centres of West Bengal.

Sthala katha — the legend

The sage Ashtavakra, whose body had been bent in eight places by a curse, is said to have been blessed by Shiva here after many years of penance.
