History & significance

The hill temple of Tiruchengode enshrining Ardhanarishvara, the half-male half-female form of Shiva and Parvati, among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams; Krishnadevaraya raised its Thirumalai gopuram in 1512, and an emerald lingam is among its treasures.

Sthala katha — the legend

When the sage Bhringi circumambulated only Shiva, Parvati performed austerities until the two merged into the single body of Ardhanareeswarar.
