History & significance

A hill tirtha in Mehsana district whose main temple, built in 1161 by the Solanki king Kumarapala under the guidance of Acharya Hemachandra, holds a 2.75 m white marble image of Ajitnatha. The site has separate Svetambara and Digambara compounds with nineteen temples between them.

Sthala katha — the legend

The name is locally traced to a shrine of the goddess Tara said to have been built by an ancient Buddhist king.
