The monastery Jayavarman VII dedicated to his mother as Prajnaparamita, goddess of wisdom — its stele records 12,640 residents and 66,000 farmers supporting it. Left deliberately in the forest's embrace by French conservators, its strangler figs and silk-cotton roots pouring over the galleries made it the world's image of ruin and return; India's ASI has partnered in its conservation since 2004.
The stele's inscription mourns and hopes at once: 'By the virtue of this good work, may my mother, freed from the ocean of existence, attain Buddhahood' — filial love as architecture, now cradled by the very jungle it once ordered.
