The Shiva temple that gives Thanesar its name, an ancient Kurukshetra pilgrimage site whose present structure was built by Raghunath Rao Peshwa. A gurdwara beside it marks a visit by the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur.
The Pandavas and Krishna are said to have worshipped Shiva here and received his blessing for victory in the Mahabharata war.
