The oldest functioning Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur, founded 1873 by the same Thamboosamy Pillai who later opened Batu Caves — mother-goddess protector of the early Tamil migrants. Its 22.9 m five-tiered gopuram of 228 deities rises straight out of Chinatown; the temple's silver chariot leads the Thaipusam procession to Batu Caves each year.
Mariamman, the rain-and-smallpox mother of Tamil villages, travelled with every ship of indentured labourers as guardian against disease in strange lands — her KL house began as their first refuge of last resort.
