History & significance

The chief shrine of the Pushtimarg Vaishnava tradition, built in 1672 after the image of Shrinathji was carried from Govardhan to Mewar for safety from Aurangzeb. It is laid out as a household rather than a conventional temple, with kitchen, treasury and stable serving the deity.

Sthala katha — the legend

Pushtimarg hagiography says Shrinathji came to Mewar to play chaupar with the princess Ajab Kunvari, who then begged him to stay rather than return to Braj.
