History & significance

One of the six great Shiva sites of the Konkan and the family deity shrine of the Kadamba kings; the present structure was commissioned by Shivaji in 1668 after the linga had been rescued and moved during Portuguese rule.

Sthala katha — the legend

The Skanda Purana relates that seven sages made a linga of seven metals here, and that Shiva agreed to remain as Saptakoteshwar, lord of the seven.
