The Great Stupa of Anuradhapura, raised by Dutugemunu after unifying the island — 103 m of whitewashed dome ringed by a wall of sculpted elephants, still among the tallest ancient monuments on earth and the model for stupas across the Buddhist world. The Mahavamsa devotes chapters to its building; restoration by public subscription (1902–1940) re-consecrated it as living worship within the UNESCO sacred city.
Dying before the spire was finished, Dutugemunu was carried to see it; his brother wrapped the unfinished dome in white cloth to console him — the king passed gazing on the stupa as though complete, the chronicle's image of merit meeting mortality.
