Jaffna, Northern Province · 9.6742°, 80.0294°
The premier temple of Tamil Sri Lanka and the ritual heart of Jaffna: its 25-day Nallur festival is the island's longest, the golden-ochre walls and gopurams its most recognisable Tamil landmark. The deity is honoured as the vel (lance) itself; through war and displacement the festival never lapsed, making Nallur the emblem of Jaffna's continuity.
The original shrine, by tradition, rose where a vision of Murugan's lance appeared to a chieftain of the medieval Jaffna kingdom; razed with every other great temple of the north by Portuguese decree, it returned — as Jaffna's saying goes — 'with the vel, which no sea can rust'.
