History & significance

Holy valley of the Cham kings for nine centuries — the longest continuously developed Indic sacred site in Southeast Asia, where each dynasty added brick kalan towers to Bhadresvara, the linga fusing king and god. The Chams' mortarless fired-brick technique still defies full explanation. B-52 carpet bombing in 1969 cratered the finest group; UNESCO listed the survivors in 1999.

Sthala katha — the legend

Cham legend and inscription fuse founder-king Bhadravarman with Shiva as one name — Bhadresvara — the earliest royal linga cult of its kind in Southeast Asia, seeding the god-king idea Angkor would monumentalise.
