History & significance

Eastern seat of the Char Dham, whose wooden deities are unlike any other in Hinduism — remade in the secret Nabakalebara rite roughly every 12–19 years. The Ratha Yatra, when the three lords ride colossal chariots down the Grand Road, is the world's oldest and largest chariot festival (and the origin of the English word 'juggernaut'); the temple kitchen, feeding Mahaprasad to tens of thousands daily, is among the largest on earth.

Sthala katha — the legend

King Indradyumna recovered the divine log (daru) from the sea; Vishvakarma agreed to carve it behind closed doors, unwatched. When the anxious queen peeped, the craftsman vanished — leaving the deities unfinished, without hands or feet: the Lord of the Universe choosing incompleteness so devotees may complete him.

Reaching there
