The 'Dwarka of the South', among the most-visited temples in Kerala, where the poet Melpathur composed the Narayaniyam (1586) and the tradition of Krishna bhakti runs deepest. Famous for its elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta and for annakoottam feasts and weddings conducted in the deity's presence.
The idol — of rare patala anjana stone — is said to have been worshipped by Krishna himself at Dwarka; as the city sank, Brihaspati (Guru) and Vayu carried it south and installed it where Shiva made way, naming the place Guru-Vayu-ur. The elephant Guruvayur Kesavan is folk-sainted here.
