Nine rock-cut monasteries cut into perpendicular sandstone in Dhar district, of which five survive, laid out on quadrangular plans comparable to Ajanta. A copperplate found in Cave 2 records repairs by Maharaja Subandhu in Gupta year 167 (487 CE); the ASI worked on the monuments for seventeen years, and the tempera paintings were lifted in 1982 and moved to the Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum at Gwalior.
